I’m putting this into the kinda-maybe but probably not pile:
The 17-35 is still current at the main Nikon English language site
http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/lens/af/zoom/index.htmIt seems Holland have withdrawn several lenses including the 50mm f1.8 and other ountries have not.
A lens not being on a price list and not been available are not quite the same thing - there are probably still a few in shops in Holland, across the borders in countries bordering Holland, and they are certainly still available in UK. The 14-24 and 24-70 are optically better, less flare prone, cover wider angles and cost less than the 17-55 and 28-70 did before the announcements of the new lenses. This means the old lenses are unlikely to be in current production.
I’m betting that we’re seeing a short-term supply issue. I’m doubting that Nikon made a ton of 17-35mm’s to begin with (they’re expensive) and the 50mm 1.8, which used to be a kit lens, is probably not in too much demand when a new person buys their first Nikon- I’m betting they go with a cheaper, higher margin (for the shop) Sigma or other crappy, crappy zoom lens.
Also- I agree with this person in that the 14-24mm is just not a replacement for the 17-35mm- the 17mm on a full-frame body is way more wide than I’m likely to ever need. I found that most of my shots with that lens are are 24mm…
On the other hand- the 50mm 1.8 screw-drive is really overdue for an AF-S makeover, so I could easily see that being discontinued and replaced at PMA2008.

If Nikon did discontinue the 17-35, I think they would have a lot of angry shooters on their hands. The 14-24 has built a large fan base in a short time due to its image quality, but 14mm on a full frame camera is crazy wide. I rarely go below 14mm on a DX. No filter option would not be cool– especially near 24mm where a polarizer could be useful. Rather than discontinuing the 17-35, Nikon needs to upgrade it to the same optical standard as the 14-24.
My guess on the 50mm would be that Nikon updates the f/1.4 to AF-S or introduces an AF-S f/1.2. A couple reasons why I don’t think the will upgrade the f/1.8: 1) it’s Nikon’s cheapest lens, making it an attractive second or third lens– the cost of AF-S could wreck that market, 2) if it is updated, it is very likely to be converted to G, wrecking several more of its markets that require an aperture ring– reversed lens macro, bellows, etc.
I would think the 50mm f/1.8 will be the very last lens converted to G, signaling the end of Nikon’s support for its oldest F-mount cameras. Kind of sad considering the only reason they are doing this is to screw over Canon users.
We’ll see in a few weeks.
It’ll be a shame to see the old 50mm 1.8 go (if that’s true). The price is just right - I doubt that the replacement will be as affordable..
