2 Pretty Girls Thrown Off Southwest Airlines Flight

Apparently they were causing a disruption on the plane because they couldn’t get water when THEY wanted it and were knocking on the lavatory door while someone was inside. Their side of the story is that the flight attendants were rude and discriminatory to them, saying “I think they were just discriminating against because we were young decent …read more | digg story

SMC New York City Meeting Reviews

Thanks to Les Blatt from LB’s Rambles for a great set of notes from last night’s SMC NYC meeting. In his post on “Learning from the Crowd” Les captured much of the discussion that went on as people introduced themselves and were asked to share one site or resource they found useful so that everyone in the group could learn about it.

Then, in “Business Gets Personal Again” Les reviewed Chris Heuer’s slides and the discussion that the group had around how Social Media is making business personal.

Allen Stern had a slightly more critical review of the meeting at Center Networks. Chris responded in the comments, and so did I but that one seems to have gotten lost or hasn’t been moderated as of yet. Allen’s feedback is appreciated, and we are looking for more folks to lead more topics. The challenge of the room’s layout -which didn’t allow for people to see each other (classroom format) - will hopefully be one of the things we fix in future meetings.

Steve Eisenberg recorded the meeting.

Enom and demand media in row with Wikileaks

Has wikileaks over extended their reach because they “think we are popular now, lets make a political stand We think so.

Local Bellevue Washington business eNom and Demand Media are in trouble with wikileaks, who are calling for a boycott of the company. What happens when a domain registrar gets in trouble? Not much of anything if seeing the past history of domain registration from OpenDNS issues, to “Domain Tasting†and the host of other ills that plague the Internet.

On the 28th of February, 2008 while everyone was paying attention to the WIKILEAKS.ORG censorship case, another Wikileaks domain, WIKILEAKS.INFO, was unlawfully locked and seized. The censoring company was domain name registrar eNom, Inc of Bellevue, Washington. eNom is the second largest registrar of domain names with 8.6 million internet domains names under its “control”.

eNom was also cited in the March 4, 2008 edition of New York Times this week for censoring a Spanish travel company with flights to Cuba.

Wikileaks successfully wrested back control of WIKILEAKS.INFO on March 6, 2008. However the behavior of eNom was egregious and without apology. On the back of this event and the New York Times article, Wikileaks decided to investigate the company. Source: Wikileaks.org

Not likely that the boycott is going to go that far, but eNom and Demand media, with offices in Bellevue do need to do some PR damage control. The investigation is interesting, but meaningless. Not that anyone is going to come to anyone’s aide here, but look at the reality of being a domain registrar. Not an easy job, filled with various take down notices and site freezes from Judges. Come on wikileaks, you saw this in your own case.

Is it really the smart idea right now to go after eNom? Right after you got frozen out by Dynadot? What is your purpose here? What are you hoping to gain, what are you revealing about the company that is not already known? Where are the secrets?

Or have you corrupted yourself by taking on a cause, rather than just dealing with information now that you have a little popularity?

We think corruption here is rife, make a case, not a cause.

    Herzog Shot During Interview

German director Werner Herzog was shot during a recent interview with the BBC… and he continued with the interview. When asked if he was okay, Herzog reportedly replied, “It was not a significant bullet. I am not afraid.”

I ask you, is this man not a god?

What REALLY makes a great, effective web site?

    Effective web sites

Let’s define effective when it comes to web site design. Effective means visitors. It means visitors who turn into sales, leads or ad revenue. Web sites are simply online advertising, and if you don’t see a return on your investment then it hasn’t worked.

This is a topic of special interest to Shycon Design(and likely to many other professional web design companies). There are a lot of web design companies out there. A lot. It seems like everyone and their uncle’s friend’s brother can do some sort of web site design. With that said, I can probably repair basic mechanical issues on my car, but does that mean it won’t break down in the middle of the freeway next week?

WordPress 2.3.2 is a Security Bug Fix

wordpress imageNot sure if I am reading too much into this, but just yesterday a WP daily builds tester complained of his site being Cracked and partly hijacked using SQL injection, and today, less than a month before the 2.4 version release, a security bug fix! Here’s the message posted on the docs.

WordPress 2.3.2 is an urgent security release that fixes a bug that can be used to expose your draft posts. 2.3.2 also suppresses some error messages that can give away information about your database table structure and limits and stops some information leaks in the XML-RPC and APP implementations. Get 2.3.2 now to protect your blog from these disclosures.

I suggest you take this warning seriously and upgrade your site(s) ASAP! As before, you can upgrade your install using my painless upgrade method.

    Don’t Blog Like Fidel Castro

Times Online has an interesting take on blogging, specifically when it comes to the personal Weblog of the soon-to-be-retired “president” of Cuba, Fidel Castro.

Bloggers know that one of the risks is inadvertently to expose too much about themselves. And Fidel was not immune: he too revealed a lot in his postings, often through omission. Indeed, his postings are as informative for what they skip as for what they include.

That is a question that all bloggers should be asking themselves: Are the things I’m leaving out of my blog more revealing than what I am including?

This particularly applies to corporate bloggers and niche bloggers who conveniently leave out references to their competitors - even when they are making international waves.

Reading a Pepsi blog without the mention of something good or bad about Coke is just silly. If the goal is greater transparency through a blog, actions speak louder than words. And sometimes the words you edit out are the ones that speak the loudest.

Don’t blog like Castro. Take a second look at your blog posts and make sure you’re sharing the whole story.

Real Time: New Rule - Stop Saying Americans Are “Smarter Than That”

    video_wmv Download | Play video_mov Download | Play (h/t Heather)

Bill Maher breaks out his new rules on Friday’s Real Time and his final rule deals with politicians who say that Americans are smart enough to see through spin and lies. Maher speaks the truth - it’s amazing that during the information age, it’s still so difficult to get factual information to the public. The facts are that Barack Obama isn’t a Muslim, Saddam Hussein wasn’t involved in the 9/11 attacks and global warming is real — yet somehow, to some, they still remain theories.

Maher:”New rule, politicians must stop saying “the American people are smarter than that.” No they aren’t! If the Bush era has taught us anything, it’s that voters want a president carved in their own image. Someone who doesn’t like to read or believe anything he’s told and is easily distracted by bright, shiny objects.”

    Conrad Johnson

Conrad Johnson, one of the centers of gravity in the Houston jazz scene, passed away on Sunday. I had only a few lessons with Prof and he kicked my butt, he must have been 80-something at the time.
